Watt’s Next? The Evolution of Power Semiconductors in Data Centers

Over the last 30 years, the computing efficiency gains inside CPUs have received most of the attention, but power semiconductor improvements in data-center power supplies have quietly delivered enormous energy savings. Power conversion efficiency has improved from roughly 80–85% in the 1990s to 96–98% today in leading AI and hyperscale systems. That may sound like only a 10–15 percentage point improvement, but because every server, switch, storage system, UPS, and power shelf depends on these devices, the impact is measured in megawatts per data center and gigawatts globally.
