Prompted to Succeed: How ChatGPT Turned My Final Exams Into AI-Powered Learning Labs

Fred Aebli - Instructor and  Internship Coordinator at Penn State Scranton

As AI becomes an unavoidable tool in education, faculty faces a central question: how do we uphold academic integrity while preparing students for a world where AI is readily available? This session introduces a two-part final exam model that offers a simple, powerful solution. In part one of the exam, students work in a secure, locked-down browser environment. No external resources are allowed. The focus here is mastery of fundamental course objectives through traditional multiple-choice or short-response questions. In part two, students are given an open environment and allowed to use any resources including AI tools like ChatGPT to solve higher-order challenges that emphasize application, synthesis, and critical thinking. This split not only reinforces essential knowledge but acknowledges and leverages real-world tools in a controlled, ethical framework. The presenter will share his own student survey data, insights from two years of implementation, and reflections on how this format has changed student confidence, performance, and honesty.
