Penn State Scranton
Fred Aebli is a 1991 graduate of Penn State University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree with a Computer Science/Math option. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. While serving around the world on active duty, he completed a Master’s degree in Computer Resource Management from Webster University in St. Louis.
After leaving active duty, Fred transitioned to the civilian tech sector, working at Bell Atlantic in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor on database systems and early internet applications. He later joined Scientech Inc. as an Oracle consultant contracted by PPL, where his team developed one of the first Decision Support Systems and Data Warehouses for the nuclear plant in Berwick, PA—pioneering the use of the then-new Oracle Application Server technology.
Fred returned to Penn State as a faculty member at the Scranton campus, where he played a key role in launching the Information Sciences and Technology (IST) and Information Technology degree programs. He teaches courses in database development, programming, web design, project management, cybersecurity, security risk analysis, and human-computer interaction (HCI), helping prepare the next generation of IT professionals for the global market.
He also serves as the coordinator for the IST & IT Internship Program, connecting students with local businesses to gain hands-on experience. In addition, Fred has been instrumental in supporting the Scranton LaunchBox, a business pre-incubator that nurtures local entrepreneurial efforts.
A former U.S. Marine Corps officer, Fred separated from the service in 2002 with the rank of Major.
To stay current in the evolving tech landscape, Fred founded GetMeCoding.com, an educational platform that inspires young learners to explore coding and electronics through creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving. He remains active in organizations such as tecBRIDGE and Tech Meetup, where he promotes the intersection of technology, education, and entrepreneurship.
Fred is also deeply engaged in exploring the impact of artificial intelligence on education and the workplace, frequently integrating emerging AI tools and discussions into his teaching and outreach.
He and his wife, Jennifer, live in Covington Township, PA, and are proud parents of three children.
