Dr. Joseph M. Mahoney

Dr. Joseph M. Mahoney is the Inaugural Chair of the John R. Post School of Engineering at Alvernia University, where he oversees the Mechanical, Electrical, and Civil Engineering programs, as well as the Industrial Engineering Technology and Management program. He leads curriculum development, ABET accreditation, and laboratory innovation while fostering a diverse faculty and creating courses that prepare students for the evolving engineering field. A key part of his role is building connections with industry partners to support engineering projects and internships.


As an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering, his research combines biomechanics and machine learning to develop affordable tools for human movement analysis. His recent work focuses on stroller running and its potential link to increased injury risk and has been featured in the Washington Post. He also conducts research applying AI in biomechanics. He teaches engineering design, statics, and programming with an emphasis on real-world application.



Dr. Mahoney previously helped launch Penn State Berks’ Mechanical Engineering degree. He earned his Ph.D. in Engineering Science and Mechanics from Pennsylvania State University and holds M.S. and B.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering.
